Abstract
The invention comprises 1-methylestrogen compounds of the probable general formul <FORM:0715939/IV (b)/1> and <FORM:0715939/IV (b)/2> (wherein Rx represents an acetyl or propiony group, B represents C = O or CH-ORy, Ry represents the residue of a fatty acid of not more than 6 carbon atoms or of an aromatic acid, and D represents C = O or CH-OH), the manufacture thereof by catalytic hydrogenation of the corresponding 1-methyl-D 6-dehydroestrogen compounds obtainable by the process of Specification 715,884, and the manufacture of (II) by saponification of (I). The products, which are characterized by solubility in alkali, possess estrogenic properties. In examples (1) 1-methyl-D 6-dehydroestrone acetate is shaken with hydrogen in ethyl acetate in the presence of palladium-on-charcoal catalyst; (2) the product of (1) is saponified; (3) 1-methyl-D 6-dehydroestradiol 3 : 17-diacetate is hydrogenated as in (1), or in the presence of barium sulphate supported catalyst; (4) 1-methylestradiol is prepared by saponification of the product of (3) or by hydrogenation of 1-methyl-D 6-dehydroestrodiol.
