Abstract

Pyridyl-3-carbinol is manufactured by hydrogenation of 3-cyanopyridine in aqueous mineral acid solution using a palladium charcoal catalyst. In an example, 3-cyano-pyridine, dilute hydrochloric acid and a suspension of palladium charcoal catalyst are hydrogenated at 20 DEG C. and atmospheric pressure, when the product after removal of catalyst and acid is extracted with butyl acetate, from which pyridyl-3-carbinol is obtained on vacuum fractionation.
