Abstract

1,165,309. Preparation of higher aliphatic alcohols. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 12 July, 1968, No. 33335/68. Heading C2C. Higher (C 8-20 ) aliphatic alcohols are preparedfrom dialkyl sulphates of formula R<SP>1</SP>OSO 2 OR<SP>2</SP> in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are C 8-20 alkyl groups by hydrolysis with water in the presence of an aliphatic and/or cycloaliphatic ketone which is miscible with water. The dialkylsulphate may be mixed with a substantial, even major, proportion of monolkyl-sulphate. The ketone, preferably acetone, may be used in aqueous solution and the hydrolysis is preferably carried out at a temperature of 60-120‹ C. and a pressure between atmospheric and 5 atm. The crude alcohols may be purified by percolation through Al 2 O 3 followed by rectification under reduced pressure or by distillation in vacuo in the presence of solid KOH or NaOH. The dialkyl sulphates may be prepared by reaction of the appropriate olefins with concentrated H 2 SO 4 at a temperature of 5-20‹ C. The examples describe the production of alcohols from dialkyl sulphates in which R<SP>1</SP> = R<SP>2</SP> - secondary dodecyl or C 15-18 alkyl.
