Abstract

o -aminocaprylic acid or its esters are obtained by the catalytic hydrogenation of 7-cyano-2,5-heptadienoic acid or its esters. The hydrogenation may be effected in one step using Raney nickel catalyst, or, preferably, in two steps: first using a palladium catalyst to give suberic seminitrile or an ester thereof and then hydrogenating this using a nickel/chromium catalyst to the o -aminocaprylic derivative. Ester products may be hydrolysed to the free acid with mineral acid, neutralised with ammonia, dried and extracted with absolute alcohol. The acid may also be purified through its hydrochloride. Some sebacic dinitrile may be obtained in the first stage of the two-stage process from dicyanooctadiene in the crude starting material. Specification 888,162 is referred to.
