Abstract
Hexahydrobenzoic acid is prepared by hydrogenating benzoic acid in the presence of hexahydrobenzoic acid and a metal hydrogenation catalyst, the benzoic acid and hexahydrobenzoic acid being present in a ratio by weight between 20 : 80 and 80 : 20. The hydrogenation takes place under pressure and at elevated temperatures, pressure and temperature depending on the particular catalyst employed. The metal hydrogenation catalyst may be rhodium on charcoal, palladium or charcoal or kieselguhr, or nickel or cobalt supported on kieselguhr or unsupported. The process may be carried out batchwise, or continuously by recycling part of the hexahydrobenzoic acid produced to constitute the starting mixture.
