Abstract

The invention comprises 3:3:3-trimethylolisopropanol and a process for its preparation by subjecting 3:3:3-trimethylolacetone to hydrogenation at normal or elevated pressure and at normal or elevated temperature in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, e.g. Raney nickel. platinum oxide, platinum black, or copper oxide-chromium oxide. In an example: trimethylolacetone is pressure hydrogenated using isopropanol as solvent and Raney nickel as catalyst to give 3:3:3-trimethylolisopropanol. Specification 791,541 is referred to.
