Abstract
6 - Alkoxy - 1 : 4 - naphthoquinones are hydrogenated with Raney nickel in benzene to the corresponding hydroquinones which are then alkylated in the 1 : 4-positions; partial hydrogenation of the product (e.g. with sodium in alcohol or liquid ammonia) gives 5 : 8-dialkoxy-2-tetralones. The example shows the production of 6-methoxy-1 : 4-naphthohydroquinone, 1 : 4 : 6 - trimethoxy - naphthalene and 5 : 8 - dimethoxy - 2 - tetralone. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to 6-acyloxy as well as alkoxy-compounds and also to these substituents in the 5-position, when 1-tetralones are produced. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
