Abstract

In a process for the preparation of hexamethylene diamine by hydrogenating adiponitrile or e -aminocapronitrile in the liquid phase with hydrogen and a Raney catalyst, part at least of the compound to be hydrogenated is added to Raney catalyst which has already been used in a previous hydrogenation and is still suspended in a liquid product of such previous hydrogenation and is under a partial hydrogen pressure of at least one atmosphere, the mixture of catalyst and starting material then being passed to the reaction zone. The suspension of used catalyst may be thickened prior to the addition of starting material. Diluents such as alcohols or hexamethylene diamine; bases and/or fresh catalyst may also be added at this stage. Suitable catalysts are Raney nickel, Raney cobalt or Raney nickel mixed with chromium. The process may be applied to multi-stage hydrogenations.
