Abstract

3-Hydroxypiperidine, or an N-substituted-3-hydroxypiperidine, or acid additions salts thereof, the N-substituent being an alkyl group of not more than 8 carbon atoms or an aralkyl group in which the alkyl moiety is greater than methyl, are prepared by a process including the step of hydrogenating under elevated temperature and pressure and in the presence of a nickel catalyst (1) 3-hydroxypiperidine or an N-benzyl - 3 - hydroxypyridinium salt to produce the 3-hydroxypiperidine, or (2) an N-substituted 3-hydroxypyridinium salt in which the N-substituent is as described above, to produce said N - substituted - 3 - hydroxypiperidine. The 3-hydroxypiperidine compound is dissolved in a solvent such as water, methanol, ethanol dioxane or mixtures thereof and hydrogenated preferably at pressures of 200 to 4000 pounds per square inch and temperatures ranging from 80 DEG to 250 DEG C. or higher in the presence of a Raney nickel catalyst.
