Abstract
In a method for the preparation of unsymmetrical dialkylhydrazines by hydrogenating dialkylnitrosoamines having less than 6 carbon atoms in each alkyl radical, in the presence of nickel as a catalyst, the catalyst is pre-treated by contacting with a dialkylnitrosoamine for at least five minutes in a hydrogen free atmosphere. The preferred catalyst is Raney nickel and the pretreatment may be by aqueous or anhydrous dialkyl nitrosoamines or mixtures thereof for up to two hours at 0 DEG C. to 180 DEG C. Examples describe the preparation of unsymmetrical dimethyl-, diethyl, dipropyl and dipentyl hydrazines by hydrogenation of the corresponding nitrosoamines at elevated pressure using pretreated Raney, sponge nickel, or nickel supported on kieselguhr to give increased yield of product.
