Abstract
761,406. Impregnated electric contact brushes. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. June 29, 1954 [Aug. 5, 1953], No. 18967/54. Class 140. An electrical contact brush comprises a carbonaceous brush stock impregnated with an alkaline earth metal fluoride and silver sulphide, the alkaline earth metal fluoride being bonded in and to the brush by means of a coked resin. The resin may be a thermoplastic or thermosetting synthetic resin such as phenol-formaldehyde or coumarone-indene. In an example electrographitic brush stock is impregnated in an aqueous solution of barium acetate, after which it is heated to 650‹ C. to convert the acetate to the carbonate. The stock is then immersed in a solution of hydrofluoric acid, saturated with barium fluoride, whereby the barium carbonate is converted to the fluoride. It is then impregnated in a solution of a phenol formaldehyde resin in acetone, after which it is air dried, heated to cure the resin, packed in coke and heated to 400-700‹ C. to coke the resin. It is then impregnated with an aqueous solution of silver nitrate and immersed in an aqueous solution of ammonium hydrosulphide to convert the silver nitrate to silver sulphide. The stock is then oven-dried and finally packed in coke and heated at 400-700‹ C.
