Abstract

A machine part such as a bearing, sealing ring or toothed gear comprises a matrix of carbon and/or graphite or a mixture of carbon and/or graphite with one or more metals and a proportion of polytetrafluoroethylene incorporated into the matrix, the incorporation being either by way of impregnation with an aqueous suspension of solid P.T.F.E. or location of an aqueous paste in grooves in the matrix after moulding. Preferably, the aqueous suspension contains approximately 50 per cent solid P.T.F.E. and the paste 80 per cent P.T.F.E. The impregnated matrix is finally dried and heated to sinter the P.T.F.E. A bonding agent such as a thermosetting resin may be included with the P.T.F.E.
