850,756. Stuffiing-box substitutes. PETERS & CO. Ltd., G. D. July 8, 1959 [July 9, 1958], No. 22038/58. Class 122 (5). A sealing arrangement for a piston rod 3a comprises a rigidly supported bearing 9 for the rod having a bush 14 of plastics material split longitudinally to compensate for dimensional changes, a sealing bush 12 formed from or including polytetrafluorethylene and a resilient mounting sleeve 10 for the sealing bush. As shown applied to sealing the piston rod 3a of a vacuum brake cylinder, the sealing bush 12, which may be of P.T.F.E. only or include an inner bearing surface of sintered bronze or other material impregnated with P.T.F.E. and be bonded to a steel or other metal ring, is provided with flanges 13 for locating it in the mounting sleeve 10, which may be of rubber.
