[Also in Group XXIV] An automatic adjustment mechanism, particularly for disc brakes, which, as shown in Fig. 1, is applied to a brake for a heavy tank, comprises a two-part member secured between the movable pressure plate 4 and a fixed pin 10 extending from the hydraulic actuator cylinder, the member consisting of a housing 8 within which a rod member 11, 12 is slidable. The housing 8 has formed therein at an acute angle to the axis of rod 12, a passage containing a ball 17 spring- pressed into engagement with a groove 20 in the rod member 11, 12 so that a one-way wedging action is produced which, while allowing the pressure-plate 4 to be freely moved to apply the brake, restricts the return movement so that the clearance is automatically adjusted. The wedging action may be cancelled by pressing inwardly pin 21, Fig. 4, so that an annular recess 23 allows a second ball 18 to move back, thus relaxing the pressure on the spring 19. Alternatively a flat portion may be formed on the pin 21. Fig. 9 shows an arrangement where. in the one-way wedging device is incorporated in the cylinder of a fluid-pressure piston and cylinder actuator device.
