Abstract
959,701. Internal shoe-drum brakes. FABBRICA ITALIANA MAGNETI MARELLI S.p.A. June 22, 1961 [June 24, 1960], No. 22581/61. Heading F2E. An internal shoe-drum brake is actuated by a wedge member 5, 20, Fig. 1, movable by a piston 2 in a pneumatic cylinder 1, rollers 7 carried by a movable cage structure 11, 13 being interposed between plungers 8 engaging the shoe-ends (not shown) and the wedge surfaces of the member 5. The piston 2 is provided with a return spring 6 which also ensures the seating of the hemispherical end of the member 5 in a corresponding recess 4 in the piston 2, and the cage structure for the rollers 7 comprises a pair of metal plates 11 having slots 24 for reception of arbors 22, Fig. 2, of the rollers 7, the plates 11 being guided by discs 12 13 and bent over to engage the disc 13 which is slidable in a housing 14 against the action of a spring 15 located between the discs. On downward movement of the wedge member 5, the rollers 7 are moved downwardly and outwardly to move the plungers 8, the plates 11 together with the disc 13 are also moved downwardly against the action of spring 15 which subsequently returns the plates 11, disc 13 and rollers 7 to the rest position. Threaded rings 9 with notched collars and screws 10 provide fit adjustment of the brakes, each ring 9 being retained in adjusted position by a flat spring 16 engaging one of the notches of the adjusting ring.
