Abstract

933,888. Internal shoe drum brakes. ROBEY & CO. Ltd., and A. CROMPTON. May 1, 1962 [May 16, 1961], No. 17737/61. Class 103 (1). An internal shoe drum brake comprises a pair of shoes 1 disposed diametrically opposite one another in a drum 2, the shoes being guided for movement radially of the drum by a frame 4, 5, 6 having arcuate guide surfaces co-operating with corresponding surfaces of radially directed portions of sliding elements 3 formed integrally with the respective shoes, means interposed between the sliding elements to urge them apart with a constant pressure to apply the shoes to the drum, and controllable fluid pressure-operated means coupled to the sliding elements for moving the latter towards one another against the constant pressure to release the brake. The means interposed between the shoes is preferably a pair of compression springs 8 adjustable by rotatable abutments 9 threaded on studs 10 or alternatively by a fluid-pressure device (not shown) in co-operation with means for securing the adjustment. The fluid pressure-operated means opposing the constant pressure is preferably a cylinder assembly 11 of which the cylinder 11a is secured to one element 3 and the piston 11b to the other element 3, pressure fluid being admitted to the space 11c to release the brake.
