Abstract

936,360. Internal shoe drum brakes. ROBEY & CO. Ltd., and A. CROMPTON. May 1, 1962 [May 16, 1961], No. 17736/61. Addition to 846,555. Class 103 (1). The arrangement disclosed in the parent Specification is modified in that it is applied to an internal shoe drum brake, the spring assemblies acting between each sliding shoe-carrying element and a fixed frame supported within the drum, and the fluid pressure-operated means opposing the spring pressure also being arranged within the drum. As shown, the brake comprises two units 1 each comprising a sliding element 5 carrying a brake shoe 4. Each element 5 slides in arcuate guides 6 and is urged radially outwardly by springs 7 bearing against a cover-plate 8 which is adjustably positioned by bolts 9 threaded into the frame sections 3. To facilitate adjustment a fluid pressure cylinder 12 is mounted on the frame so that extension of its piston 13 moves the cover-plate to compress the springs. By supplying fluid at the same pressure to the cylinders 12 of the two units the springs can be set to the same compression, in which state they are held by manual adjustment of the bolts 9. The fluid-pressureoperated means opposing the spring pressure is a further cylinder 10 secured to the frame, the piston 11 of which bears against a central portion of the element 5 so as to move the latter radially inwardly when pressure fluid is admitted to the cylinder.
