[Also in Groups X and XXIV] A telescopic pit prop, tie rod, &c. comprises an inner member 3 adapted to be clamped by the frictional grip of a flexible sleeve 8 on which acts liquid, gas, rubber or other elastic medium 2 in an annular chamber 4 in the outer member 1 compressed by a screw cap 7 and a bush 6 on the chamber may be within the inner member, Fig. 3. The sleeve 8 is longitudinally slit. The rubber 2 may be formed with an annular chamber containing a gaseous, liquid or other elastic medium. This chamber may be changed after being placed in position, through a valve and the pressure therein increased by a piston which is forced into the chamber. This modification is also shown arranged for the supply of pressure fluid under the part 3. In Fig. 3 the material 2 is contained in the lower part of the inner part 3 which is here made expandible, i.e. thinner, or is slit. The material 2 is compressed by a wedge 18 and rod 17. The inner part 3 may taper towards its lower end.
