Abstract

556,903. Shock absorbers. RIBBESFORD CO., Ltd., and THORNHILL, P. W. April 8, 1941, No. 2245/42. Divided out of 561,925. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVI] The tubular plunger 15 of a telescopic combined pneumatic spring and hydraulic damper is pressed inwards at its inner end to form an external peripheral groove 91 containing packing and an internal circumferential protuberance co-operating with the damping valve 42. The packing may consist of a soft rubber ring 93 and split rings 94, 95. The annular space 96 between the cylinder 10 and the plunger 15 is vented through holes 98 controlled by a spring ring 97 having circular and chord parts. A baffle 40 slidable freely upon rod 106 tends to prevent mixing of damping liquid and compressed gas, the periphery of the baffle being flexible. The baffle may be of rubber, and a stop 104 is formed on the end of the rod. Specification 542,142 is referred to. In a modification the groove 91 is widened and has a form trapezoidal in radial axial section.
