Abstract

715,358. Props. SAFWAY STEEL PRODUCTS, Inc. Feb. 25, 1952, No, 4891/51. Class 20 (2) A prop comprises a lower tubular part 10, Fig. 2, threaded at its upper end 10a and receiving telescopically an upper part 12, a nut 20 on the threaded part 10a. carrying a thrust collar 18 having an annu'us 26 depending between the nut 20 and part 12 and providing a bearing for the upper part 12 which at its lower end is formed with bosses 28 bearing against the lower part 10, the upper part 12 having axially spaced holes 14 for selectively receiving a pin 16 adapted to rest on top of the collar 18 to support the part 12. Only the lower part of the nut 20 is threaded, the upper part having a smooth bore slightly greater than the diameter of the threads on the lower prop part 10, thus reducing thread friction but retaining stability. When not in use the pin 16 may be passed through opposed holes 32, Fig. 3, in the nut 20 and through holes 14 in the upper part 12 to lock the part 12 to the nut 20 and the pin held in position by turning the nut to bring the pin against the top of the lower part 10 as shown in Fig. 3, so preventing inadvertent telescopic action when carrying the prop. A depending sleeve may be added to the nut 20 to prevent fouling the threaded part 10a with mortar, cement &c.
