662,201. Pit props. PROGRES CHARBONNIER PROCHAR SOC. CO-OPERATIVE. Aug. 2, 1949 [April 4, 1949], No. 20127/49. Class 20 (ii) A locking device for the parts of a telescopic pit prop comprises a wedge 6, the edges of which bear on convex conical surfaces 7 and 8 on a bearing 4, integral with a collar 3 fixed on the tubular standard 2 and a bearing 5 frictionally held by the wedge against the extension member 1, respectively. The wedge 6 is in an oblique position so that on applying load to the extension member the bearing 5 is carried downwards and the wedge pivots about the centre of curvature O of the surface 7. Stops 9 and 10 on the bearing 5 limit its upward and downward movement by engagement with the collar. In a modification the surface 8 of the wedge is convexly curved.
