Abstract
684,284. Pit props. GERLACH, H. Nov. 14, 1950 [Nov. 14, 1949]. No. 27858/ 50. Class 20 (ii). A metallic telescopic pit prop comprises a vertical friction wedge 4 adapted to be carried down with the inner prop member 1 under mine roof pressure and supported on the prop lock collar 3 by an intermediate member 6 which is supported by an abutment 9 rockable on a curved surface and the locking and releasing wedge 5, bearing on a curved surface. A stirrup 4a embracing the member 1, on engaging the wedge 4 assumes an oblique position which causes it to grip the member 1 and assist the downward movement of the wedge. A spring plunger 10 in the member 6 returns the wedge 4 to initial position determined by a stop 12 on the wedge engaging the outer prop member 2. A friction lining 14 is arranged between a wedge 4 and the inner member 1. In a modification, the wedge 5 is rounded on both edges so as to pivot during the collapsing of the prop and the lock collar 3 is constructed as a stirrup inside which the abutment 9 is arranged. Further modifications show various constructions of the collar 3. In Fig. 7 the member 6 is supported by a member 18 rockable in a bearing 19 in the collar 3 and engaged by the wedge 5. The plunger 10 is arranged underneath the collar 3. An insert 20, having curved surfaces, may be arranged between the prop members opposite the friction lining 14 and may be riveted in position. The plunger 10, Fig. 1, may be replaced by a plunger having a collar which limits the downward travel of the wedge 4. Specification 670,287 is referred to.
