A dental hand or angle piece equipped with a detachable grinding tool, is provided with a bearing bush fixed to or integral with the hand or angle piece and projecting from the front end of the hand or angle piece to form a journal bearing through which the grinding tool spindle can be inserted and withdrawn, the arrangement being such that substantially the whole length of the grinding tool spindle is guided in the bearing bush. The front piece 2, Fig. 1, of a known kind of hand piece is provided with a bearing bush 3 having a lubrication hole 5 and detachably connected to the front piece 2 by a screw thread. Alternatively the bearing bush 35, Fig. 8, may be attached to a handpiece 27 by means of a slide-on sleeve 30 which is secured to the hand piece 27 by a bayonet slot which engages a stud 28 on the hand piece 27. The bayonet closure may be replaced by the provision of longitudinal slots in the rear of the slide-on sleeve which is tightened on the hand piece by a ring nut (not shown). A grinding wheel 38 mounted on the hand piece is provided with a cheek shield 41 which is secured by a cap sleeve 40 which fits over the bearing bush 35. In an angle piece, Fig. 10, the bearing bush is formed by an integral extension 47 of the head of the hand piece. Alternatively the bearing bush may be formed from an integral extension (not shown) of a bearing sleeve 46. The bearing bush is made of bearing metal. Additional guidance for the grinding tool spindle may be provided by a bearing bush (not shown) screwed on to an angle piece outside the usual bearing sleeve and forming a journal bearing.
