Abstract
419,860. Steady rests. HAHN, H., HAHN, O., and TESSKY, K., (trading as INDEX-WERKE HAHN & KOLB), Esslingenon-Neckar, Germany. April 11, 1934, No. 10872. Convention date, May 4, 1933. [Class 83 (iii).] A guide bush 6 mounted in the end of a lathe spindle 1 to form a rotary steady rest for bar stock is slotted from opposite ends at 7, 8 and is provided with tapered ends co-operating with cones 3, 5 provided respectively in a cap 2 screwed on the spindle 1 and in a collar 4 screwing on the cap 2. Adjustment of the collar 4 varies the internal diameter of the bush 6 to the exact size of the bar stock, and locking is effected by a nut 9. The bush 6 may be reversed in the spindle when the outer end of the bore has become worn, but in a non- reversible modification, the bush is tapered at one end only. In a further modification, the conical surface 5, Fig. 3, is formed in the cap 2 screwing on the spindle 1 and the conical surface 3 is formed on a bush 12 resiliently pressed by springs 13 so as to allow the diameter of the bore in the bush 6 to vary automatically to suit variations in the bar stock. The springs 13 are seated in a ring 14, the bush 12 being accurately centred by the ring 14 and the ring by the cap 2. The bar stock is fed through the bush 6 during machining and the bush is made of hard bronze or other hard non-ferrous metal so as not to sieze on the bar stock or score it during feeding. The device may also be incorporated in a steady rest mounted in front of the lathe spindle and rotated from the latter.
