Abstract

1,092,708. Cutting tools. J. ANDREWS & SONS Ltd. July 21, 1966, No. 32813/66. Heading B3B. A cutting tool for a lathe comprises a holder 1 with a recess at one end for a cutter 6 and a clamp 12 which is secured to the holder and co-operates with the cutter to urge it into the recess. The cutter is formed by a tip 7 and a seat portion 8, the base of the recess being concave to receive the convex projection on the cutter seat 8. The back 3 of the recess is formed to fit part of the periphery 11 of the cutting tip 7. A hardened steel ball 16 is located between the clamp 12 and the tip 7, the ball engaging the periphery of an aperture 10 in the tip. The other end of the clamp has an inclined surface which co-operates with a corresponding surface 17 on the holder shank so that when the clamp screw 19 is tightened the cutter is urged into the base of the recess and at the same time into engagement with the back of the recess to provide maximum rigidity between the cutter and the holder. The cutter may be formed in one piece, the tip and seat portion being integral.
