Abstract

758,491. Obtaining fibres from-plant stems. PICCIATI, A. June 28, 1954, No. 18884/54. Class 120 (1). In a machine for extracting textile fibres from plant stems, material fed to the machine through a mouthpiece 1 passes between pairs 2 and 3 of smooth steel crushing cylinders, rollers 2 being spring-pressed together and rollers 3 being on fixed axes; the crushed material then passes as a ribbon vertically downwards through groups A-E of working members; each working group consists of two pairs of feed and delivery rollers, each comprising a rubbercovered roller 4 and a smooth steel roller 5 spring-pressed together, and an intermediate pair of toothed cylinders 6, the cylinder teeth 38 are shaped as shown in Fig. 5 and intermesh with clearances; rollers 4, 5 are driven at the same peripheral speed in all groups, while cylinders 6 have a peripheral speed which increases from the first to the last group but is less than that of rollers 4, 5. The angular position of the teeth of one cylinder is adjustable with respect to those of the other as shown in Fig. 6; the cylinder shafts are geared together by gears 33, 34 ; gear 33 is fixed on its shaft, while gear 34 is loose on its shaft but carries a block 35 adjustably engaged by means of screws 36 with a stirrup 37 fixed to the shaft. Mouthpieces 8, 9, 10 are located in front of each group to laterally condense the ribbon of material fed to the group. The vibratory action of the cylinders 6 removes the woody matter from the fibres; this waste matter falls into hoppers 17 whence it is removed by an exhauster 14, while the fibre is removed by a conveyer belt 12.
