Abstract

Anhydrous magnesium chloride is separated from mixtures of it with other solid substances by extraction with acetone or another methyl alkyl or methyl aryl ketone, diacetone alcohol or isopropyl alcohol. The process is applied particularly to the mixture of titanium, magnesium and magnesium chloride obtained in the reduction of titanium tetrachloride with magnesium. This mixture, which has preferably been protected from the atmosphere by covering it with carbon tetrachloride, is suspended in the acetone, &c., and hydrogen chloride is passed in to convert the remaining magnesium to chloride. The solution is then decanted from the finely divided titanium and evaporated to dryness. Specifications 722,184 and 757,910 [both in Group II] are referred to.ALSO:Anhydrous magnesium chloride is separated from mixtures of it with other solid substances by extraction with acetone or another methyl alkyl or methyl aryl ketone, diacetone alcohol or isopropyl alcohol.
