Abstract
1,175,085. Aluminium fluoride. ELEKTROKEMIST A/S. 19 Jan., 1967 [20 Jan., 1966], No. 2983/67. Heading C1A. Aluminium fluoride is precipitated from solution by adding alumina as seeding nuclei, the weight of added alumina (Al2O3) being at least three times as great as that of the aluminium fluoride initially in solution. Precipitation is about 99%. Precipitation may be effected in one stage, or addition of the alumina may be preceded by a partial precipitation effected by adding aluminium fluoride as seeding nuclei. The partial precipitate may be removed before addition of the alumina. The final precipitate, consisting of a mixture of alumina and aluminium fluoride, may be dried and calcined for use in melt-electrolytic production of alumina. The aluminium fluoride solution, which may be supersaturated, may be obtained by reaction of aluminium-containing material with a solution containing 5% or less of HF.
