A pressure relief valve for hydraulic systems comprises a closure disc 130 coacting with a knife-edge seating 110 and loaded by a spring 140 which abuts an adjustable plate 150 and is compressed to a point just below its limit of lateral stability, so that when the closure member is raised from its seating it is substantially free laterally and is subject to a centring force due to the flow of liquid between the disc and seating.
