In a method of hotworking metals a rough product is first formed by extruding or piercing, using a vitreous lubricant such as glass which remains as a coating during further hot deformation operations such as rolling to form the final product. In making a turbine blade section a bar 11, Fig. 3, is extruded to a section with a rounded trailing edge 12 using a vitreous lubricant and the section while still hot and coated with a layer of the lubricant is rolled to the final section, Fig. 1, having a sharp trailing edge. In another example, tubes extruded with the lubricant are fed over a mandrel and immediately rolled to the required final size without an intermediate heating operation.
