Abstract

1280401 Making knives; altering physical properties R J EICKHORN 19 May 1970 [21 May 1969] 24203/70 Headings B3A and B3V A method of making a knife blade comprises making a blank having a cross-section which is thicker at the portion which is to form the cutting edge than at the portion which is to form the back of the knife, Fig. 3 (not shown), coldforging the blank to form a semi-finished product having a thickened portion 7 about the edge which is to form the cutting edge, Fig. 4, and removing the surplus metal to form the knife blade 6. The blank is produced from stainless steel by forging at 600‹ C. The cold working of the blank produces a hardness of 42-50 Rc in the inner core 6 and a hardness of 35-42 Re in the outer skin.
