Abstract

1350422 Mowers J HABAN 25 June 1971 [20 July 1970] 30021/71 Heading A1F [Also in Division B3] A shear finger for an agriculture machine such as a sickle-bar mower, combine harvester or swather, is made by cutting a blank from flat strip metal and then deforming the blank between one or more pairs of dies to provide a mounting portion 16 displaced from the plane of a finger portion 21 having a central concavity 24 bordered by flat margins 25 which provide shearing edges 26. Each mounting portion 16 has preferably two finger portions 21. Shear finger blanks are punched in nested multiples from a flat strip of alloy steel. The blanks are heated and formed between one or more pairs of stamping dies (10, 11, Fig. 8 not shown) to their final shape, Figs. 2, 3. The flat surfaces 25 of the fingers are ground to produce the shearing edges 26. Finally the formed fingers are heat treated to harden the areas 21 by quenching and then tempering. The shear fingers are mounted on a cutter bar by bolts (33) Fig. 6 (not shown) and cooperate with a reciprocable knife having a plurality of V-shaped blades (27). Hold down clips (31) maintain the knife blades and the fingers in shearing contact.
