Abstract

380,336. Making compound cutlery blades. EVANS, W. E., 27, Chancery Lane, London.-(Deutsche Edelstahlwerke, Akt.- Ges. ; Krefeld, Germany.) Jan. 19, 1932, No. 1642. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Piling.-Relates to knife blades built up of layers of different hardness and consists in a method of manufacture whereby the layers lie in a direction across the cutting edge. A block of metal is first produced in which layers of chromiumnickel steel alternate with layers of chromium iron, for example. The block is pressed, given a zig-zag form, of which the angles are cut off, and then forged to produce a narrow block, as shown in the Figure. The knife blanks are cut from this. Alternatively, layers of chromium-steel and chromium-nickel steel alternate with layers of pure iron or with iron or nickel or other metal which has been rendered rustless by addition of known alloys.
