Abstract

Cased forms; cutlery and like blades ; scissors and shears; needles; chisels.-Cutting, piercing and like instruments such as knives, shears, chisels, needles are rendered seli - sharpening by forming them of at least four layers of a material or materials of varying hardness. The tool may be produced by progressively increasing the decarburization of a steel body at the points of less and less wear, by welding a series of layers to the main layer, or by electrolytically depositing or spraying a series of layers on to the main layer. The decarburization is effected by encasing the cutting parts in clay, covering the surfaces with a packing of iron ore &c. and heating to a red heat. Layers of wolfram &c. may be electrolytically deposited in a bath the composition of which is constantly altered or by depositing successively in different baths. In Fig. 2, a knife has a hard layer 5 with gradually 'weaker layers 6 - - 11 welded thereto of thickness 0.1 m.m., and for fine knives 0.01 m.m. In making shears or chisels, the hardest layer 5 is on one side, Fig. 3.
