Abstract

351,722. Castings ; rolling. FIRTHSTERLING STEEL CO., McKeesport, Pennsylvannia, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Firth, L.G.; Pittsburg, and Longnecker, P.F.; McKeesport, both in Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) June 11, 1930, No. 17920. Convention date, Oct. 18, 1929. [Classes 83 (i) and 83 (iv).] A grooved metallic body having an open grain D, Fig. 5, extending to the bottom of said groove, is rolled to close the edges 5 over the open grain. The groove may be formed by cutting an ingot, as described in Specification 348,426 along a surface P, Fig. 1, or by feeding the portion B cut off along a surface E through a roll-pass 2, Fig. 5, the rib 4 on the upper roll serving to keep the alignment. The closing of the groove is effected by a series of roll-passes to produce a section 12, Fig. 8, which is turned through 90‹ and fed to a roll-pass of diamond shape. If desired, the open grain may be rolled to form a groove a second time, for instance, after emerging from the rollpass 7, Fig. 6.
