Abstract
700,503. Making cutting tools. ELECTRO METAL HARDENING CO. SOC. ANON. Dec. 28, 1950 [Dec. 30, 1949], No. 33383/49. Class 83 (2) In a method of making razor blades, saw blades and other edged tools one or more hard metals is electrolytically applied and fused with the body before the edges are finally ground, polished &c. Razor blades of strip steel 1, Fig. 1, with ground edges 1a, 1b are plated along the cutting edges with cobalt, tungsten or chromium and then subjected to H.F. heating to fuse the applied layer. The strip is first given a coatng 5 of a non-conducting material such as polythene or pyrotex and then drawn by electrode rollers through a plating bath containing anodes 3 conforming to the shape of the edges so as to obtain an even deposit. The non-conducting coating is then removed by scrapers and the strip passed through H.F. heating coils 13, Fig. 3, which heat the edges of the strip and fuse the applied layer of hard metal. In a modification the edges are heated by blasts of heated inert gas.
