Class 122(3) [Also in Group XXVIII] A joint between plane abutting surfaces, such as the mating faces of turbine casing flanges 12, 14 clamped together by bolts 13, is sealed by a deformable packing element 17 located in a recess formed by registering grooves 15, 16 in the flanges and compressed therein by a member 18 pressed against the packing element by means, such as bolts 10, operable from outside the grooves. The element 17 may be of metal, for example, soft iron, and both it and the member 18 may be formed of a number of parts.
