Abstract

A seal comprises an annular spring 6 of rectangular cross-section housed in a recess 8 in one of two parts 1, 2 to be joined, the spring being either compressed or expanded by a packing member 10, 12 which is arranged to be deformed by a projection as and when the two parts are brought together. The projection may be integral with the packing or with one of the parts to be sealed. The spring may be made of solid steel and the packing member 10, 12 may be made of metal or P.T.F.E. As shown in Fig. 1, the packing member is in the form of a pair of continuous wedge-rings 10, 12 which compress the spring 6 as the two parts 1 and 2 are clamped together. In Fig. 7, the packing member is displaced to compress the spring 6 by means of a projection 22 on the part 2. In Fig. 9, a projection 26 on the packing member itself is flattened as the two parts 1 and 2 are clamped together in order to displace the spring. In Fig. 11 (not shown), the spring of rectangular cross-section is formed by a stack of split rings (30) which are expanded by the packing member (4) as the two parts are clamped together, the stack being protected by a thin band of steel (34).
