Abstract

1,100,508. Shaft seals; joint-making packing. N. D. TRBOVICH. 29 Nov., 1966, No. 53443/66. Heading F2B. A seal between, for example, a rotary shaft 8 and its housing 7 comprises a V-section ring 1 having sealing portions 5 adjacent the outer ends of its walls 4 urged apart by an expander ring located between the walls and comprising a tubular ring 2 having a circumferential slot 26 therein. The ring 2 is split at 9 and is compressed between the walls 4 by a shoulder 11 on the shaft, the apex 3 of the ring 1 abutting the bottom wall 10 of a recess in the housing 7 and the sealing portions 5 engaging the recess wall 6 and the shaft 8. The rings 1 and 2 may be of metal and the sealing portions 5 may have a metal or plastics coating. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the ring (2) abuts a collar (13) secured to the housing (7<SP>1</SP>).
