Abstract
757,149. Gas scrubbers. PILO, C. W. June 29, 1954 [June 29, 1953 ; Oct. 29, 1953 ; June 17, 1954], No. 19077/54. Class 55(2). [Also in Group XIII] In apparatus for the exchange of heat and /or soluble substances between two flowing media of different specific gravity, the heavier medium, which is a liquid, is moved centrifugally over rotating surfaces in countercurrent to the lighter medium, which may be a liquid or a gas. The apparatus is described as a gas-liquid contact apparatus in which gas enters a cylindrical chamber la through a tangential inlet 1, and passes through a rotating drum 3 on its way to a central outlet 2. Liquid is supplied through a pipe 15 to a trough 13, via the inside wall of a cone 17 mounted on the hub 6a of the drum spindle 4, and is projected by the rotation over the rim 13a on to radial plates 18 and thence to plates 11 mounted between spacers on bolts 12. To ensure that all the gases flow through the plates 11 to the central outlet 2, a liquid seal 7 is provided, the walls of the seal being inclined, e.g. at an angle of 30 degrees to 45 degrees to the axis of the rotor, to prevent the liquid from being ejected centrifugally. The plates 11 may be arranged vertically or horizontally, and may be corrugated. They may be arranged tangential to a common circle, or they may be radial in which case the outer ends of the plates may be thickened to preserve uniformity of, or even to contract, the passages between them. The plates may be replaced by filler bodies 10 which are retained in position by metal wire fabric or grids. Three centrifugal units may be arranged co-axially as shown in. Fig. 12, for removal of H 2 S and NH 3 from raw coke oven gas which is admitted to the first stage, whilst fresh water is admitted to the third stage. The water from the third stage is mixed with ammonia water from the first stage, or with other ammonia water, e.g., condensate from the gas cooler, and admitted to the second stage. The water from the second stage, rich in ammonium sulphide, is passed, in part, to the first stage. Gaseous ammonia may be added to the gas before entering the second stage to improve the scrubbing of H 2 S in that stage.
