Class 80(4) A ratchet device for ensuring uni-directional rotation of a rotary member, such as the rotor of a synchronous electric motor, comprises a pivoted pawl 3 co-operating with ratchet teeth 5 on the rotary member 1 which is kept in engagement by magnetic attraction between a soft iron tailpiece 6 on the pawl and a permanent magnet 7. Alternatively the tailpiece 6 may be arranged adjacent and acted upon by the magnetic poles of the stator of the motor. Also the tailpiece 6 may be the permanent magnet and the member 7 may be of soft iron.
