Abstract

756,440. Overload slip clutches. FORDS (FINSBURY), Ltd. July 27, 1954 [July 28, 1953], No. 20896/53. Class 80(2) [Also in Groups XVI and XVII] An overload slip clutch for bottle capping and filling machines comprises a driving shaft and housing 8, 10, Fig. 1, carrying a disc 13 with holes 15 for balls 17 engaged on one side by apertures 16 in a driven disc 12 and on the other by a collar 18 biased towards them by a spring 19. Pairs of the balls 17, Fig. 3, are arranged diametrically opposite each other and on circles of different diameters, so that when the clutch has disengaged on overload and the balls have ridden out of the recesses, the clutch cannot re-engage until the driving and driven discs 13, 12 have rotated relatively to each other through a complete revolution. The compression of the spring 19 is adjusted by a nut and lock nut 21, 22. Another form of overload slip clutch shown comprises a driving gear 38, Fig. 5, formed with apertures for balls 56 pushed into recesses 58 in a collar 57 by a collar 54 and spring 61. The collar 57 is keyed to a driven shaft 39.
