Abstract
755,510. Trimming welding joints; portable turning-tools. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. June 18, 1954 [June 18, 1953], No. 16894/53. Classes 83 (3) and 83 (4). In a tool for removing the flash at the welded joint between two cylindrical members, having a body to be fitted on the joint and rotated about the common axis of the members, a cutting device 7 with two parallel cutting edges 9, 9, each longer than the flash width and spaced apart by a distance less than the diameter of the smallest members to be operated upon, is mounted in the body with the edges 9, 9, parallel with and equidistant from the axis and means are provided for adjusting the device 7 relatively to the body so that the edges simultaneously approach the flash. The body is formed by two spaced plates each having an opening 4 leading to a central slot which on one side of the opening forms a groove for the welded members and on the other side a guide for the cutting device 7. The device 7, which may be of tool steel, is a block having a groove 8 between cutting edges 9 which are bevelled at 10 to reduce their length, and is secured to a rod 12 slidable in the body and urged towards the opening 4 by a spring 21. An extension 14 of the rod 12 forms one handle and another 15 is secured between the plates. A knurled nut 17 engages a threaded part of the rod 12 and a further thread thereon may engage a threaded extension 20 on the body. In operation, the nut is disengaged from the extension and adjusted on the rod to suit the dimensions of the welded members; the handle 14 is pulled to withdraw the block 7 and the members are entered in the opening 4 with the flash between the plates. The handle is released and the nut engages the extension with the edges 9, 9, just out of contact with the flash. The nut is screwed on to the extension to engage the edges 9, 9, with the flash and the tool is rotated on the members. The nut may be free to rotate on the rod 12 without being able to move along it.
