Abstract

The invention relates to a tool for removing an external peripheral bead of surplus material formed at a butt-welded joint in a plastics pipe. The tool comprises a blade 5 and a blade holder 6 which is releasably attachable to the pipe 2 by means of an attachment 7 in such a manner that the holder 6 engages the external surface of the pipe 2 while movement of the holder 6 around the circumference of the pipe 2 is permitted. The blade 5 is so positioned in the holder 6 that movement of the holder 6 in a clockwise direction around the pipe 2 while the holder 6 is attached to the pipe 2 and the blade 5 is engaging the bead 4 causes the bead 4 to be removed by the blade 5. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A tool for removing surplus material from a pipe This invention relates to a tool for removing an external peripheral bead of surplus material formed at a butt-welded joint in a plastics pipe.
Plastics pipes of polyethylene, aldyl or similar material are now extensively used in the gas and water industries as mains. In the laying of mains of such material, it is conventional practice to join shorter lengths of such pipes together to form a continuous longer main. The technique of jointing most widely used is butt-welding in which the ends of adjacent pipes are butt-welded together by simultaneously pressing the ends together while fusing a small end thickness of the adjacent pipes. This produces at the joint, a peripheral bead of surplus material formed on the inside and outside of the jointed pipe.
The presence of the external peripheral bead of surplus material may make it difficult if not impossible to push the pipe into a plastics liner such as is used in the mains replacement technique fully described in our published UK patent application no.
2092701 A.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a tool which can remove this external bead from the pipe before it is pushed into the liner.
According to the present invention there is provided a tool for removing an external peripheral bead of surplus material formed at a butt-welded joint in a plastics pipe, the tool comprising a blade and a blade holder which is releasably attachable to the pipe in such a manner that the holder engages with the external surface of the pipe while movement of the holder around the circumference of the pipe is permitted, the blade being so positioned in the holder that movement of the holder in one direction around the pipe while the holder is attached to the pipe and the blade is engaging the bead causes the bead to be removed by the blade.
An embodiment of the invention will now be particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section elevation through a jointed aldyl pipe showing the bead of surplus material, Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of the tool mounted on the pipe, Figure 3 is a cross section through the holder, Figure 4 is a section on the centre line of the pipe showing the tool mounted on the pipe and Figure 5 is an isometric view of the components of the tool.
Referring to Figure 1, the surplus material at the joint 1 of the jointed pipe 2 forms an internal and external circumferential bead 3 and 4 respectively.
The external bead must be removed if the pipe 2 is to be pushed into a liner.
Referring to Figures 2 to 5, the tool comprises a flat metal blade 5 which is mounted in a blade holder 6, to which is attached a releasable clamping means 7 for clamping the holder 6 on the pipe 2 in the manner shown in Figure 2.
The blade holder 6 which may be of steel or plastics comprises a block formed in two half body portions 8 and 9 as shown in Figure 4. Each half body 8 and 9 comprises a generally rectangular uppermost portion 10 from which there depends a lowermost pipe wall engaging leg 11.
Each portion 10 is formed with a machined slot 12 between the legs 11 and within which the blade 5 is held as by a force-fitting. In use the half bodies 8 and 9 are clamped together by a pair of Allen-type body screws 13 which extend through suitable screw threaded apertures in the half-bodies 8 and 9. This results in the formation of a bead escapment aperture 14 within the body of the holder 6, the half bodies 8 and 9 being formed on their internal surfaces with corresponding recesses 15 and 16 (see Figure 4) which cooperate to form the escapment 14 when the half-bodies 8 and 9 are clamped together.
The angle of the blade 5 is such that in use the bead 4 removed by the blade 5 is caused to enter and leave the holder 6 by way of escapment 14 as shown in Figure 3. Each leg 11 of the half bodies 8 and 9 is formed with a lowermost surface 17 for engaging the external surface of the pipe 2 on either side of the bead 4 as shown in Figure 4the blade 5 lying between the legs 11 to engage the bead 4. The surfaces 17 are, as shown in Figures 2,3 and 5 shaped to conform with the circumference.
The blade cutting edge 18 should ideally terminate level with the surfaces 17 so that, in use, the complete thickness of the bead 4 is removed.
The releasable clamping means 7 comprises a pair of generally semi-circular steel straps 19 and 20. One end of each strap 19,20 is secured to locating pins 21 which extend between the half bodies 8 and 9. For this purpose, the half bodies 8 and 9 are partly cut away to form two pairs of end shoulders 22. The pins 21 are releasably retained in apertures in the shoulders 22 and the ends of the straps 19,20 are looped to slidably fit over the pins so that the loops 23 are located between each shoulder 22 in the pair. Each strap is provided with steel guides 24 and 25 welded to the inside of each strap as shown in Figure 1. The guides 24, 25 take the form of blocks which are provided with a notch or channel on the surface lying adjacent the bead so as to clear the bead.
One of the straps, in this case strap 18 is provided with a steel handle 26 to enable the assembly in use to be manually moved about the pipe circumference after attachment to the pipe 2.
As shown in Figure 2, the other ends of the straps 19,20 are provided with a releasable toggle catch arrangement 27 to enable the straps to be secured to each other after location about the pipe circumference.
After positioning of the tool on the pipe 2 in the manner shown in the figures, movement of the handle in a clockwise direction will cause the blade 5 to bite into the bead 4 and, with continuing movement of the holder around the pipe circumference, to strip the bead 4 from the pipe 2 in the manner shown in Figure 3. The stripped bead 4 enters and leaves the holder by way of the escapment. After the bead has been removed, the toggle catch 24 can be released to release the straps 18 and 19 from each other and the tool from the pipe.

Claims (5)

1. Atool for removing an external peripheral bead of surplus material formed at a butt-welded joint in a plastics pipe, the tool comprising a blade and a blade holder which is releasably attachable to the pipe in such a manner that the holder engages with the external surface of the pipe while movement of the holder around the circumference of the pipe is permitted, the blade being so positioned in the holder that movement of the holder in one direction around the pipe while the holder is attached to the pipe and the blade is engaging the bead causes the bead to be removed by the blade.
2. A tool as claimed in Claim 1 in which the holder has a body formed with an aperture permitting discharge of the bead through the body and the blade is positioned so that after removal by the blade the bead enters the aperture.
3. A tool as claimed in claim 2 in which the holder has two surfaces for engaging the external surfaces of the pipe lying on either side of the bead, the blade lying between the two holder surfaces.
