Abstract
755,221. Flanging plastic pipe ends. FOLKARD, Ltd., J. S. & F. Dec. 8, 1954 [Nov. 20, 1953], No. 32236/53. Class 87(2) A pipe 5 of, e.g. polythene is mounted on a core 6 and inserted through a threepart ring 4 in a body 1. A die 7 having a rebate 7b is placed over the pipe and secured by a screw-threaded collar 8. The end of the pipe is softened by an annular heating hood having a gas burner 11 or in a modification (Fig. 4, not shown) an electric heating element. When the pipe is softened, the heater is replaced by an annular former 13 removably mounted in a housing 14, and axial pressure is applied to the housing to cause a rebate 13a to force the end of the pipe into the rebate 7b. The core 6 is of a slightly greater diameter than that required for the finished tube, to allow for shrinkage on cooling. The Provisional Specification describes the construction of a portable vice for applying pressure to the former which may be preheated.
