Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A device for coupling a tubular thermal lance (not shown) to an oxygen supply pipe (not shown) comprises a casing 1 formed with a passage 2 for receiving the lance, a sleeve 11 deformable by a nut 14 to grip the lance, a nipple 18 for attachment of the oxygen supply pipe, and a hollow plunger 5, which is depressible by the lance to displace a valve 3 from its seating against the action of a spring 4. The sleeve 11 may be of rubber and located between rigid rings 10 and 12. A guard 15 is screwed on to the nut 14. Annular steps 8 and 9 on the plunger 5 facilitate centralizing of lances of differing external diameters. If the lance is not changed when a predetermined maximum length of it has burnt away, the flame from the short stub of lance left within the device will burn the sleeve 12 to free the stub, whereupon valve 3 will close.
