Abstract

754,265. Making burners. COATES, D. A. April 27, 1954, No. 12086/54. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XI] A gas burner of the aerated type, having a tubular burner mouth 3 provided with a longitudinal internal ridge, is made by bending over two side edges of a rectangular metal sheet to form flanges 2, bending the sheet into a tubular form so that the flanges 2 are directed inwardly and form a narrow slit, and compressing the tube 3 so that the flanges 2 are forced together to form the longitudinal internal ridge, one end of the tube 3 being subsequently ground to form a lip F of knife edge form. The tube 3, which may be of stainless steel, is compressed by inserting one end thereof into a soft metal tube 4 having one end closed, and reducing the diameter of the tube 4 by passing it through successively smaller dies. A further soft metal tube 6 is fitted around the tube 4, the end walls 5, 7 being spaced apart, and the assembly is pressed between further dies to cause the tube 6 to grip the tube 4 with the formation of a stiffening ring D, and to taper a part C of the tube 6. Holes G are then drilled in the walls 5, 7 for the passage of gas, and holes E drilled in the tubes 4, 6 for the admission of air. The lip F is then ground on the outer end of the tube 3.
