Abstract
753,688. Travelling-wave tubes; magnetrons. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. March 18, 1954 [March 18, 1953], No. 7973/54. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XL (c)] The output of a travelling-wave magnetron is modulated by applying pulses to an auxiliary electrode 7 in front of the cathode 3 and in line with the delay line 2. The auxiliary electrode is negatively biased and normally the cathode is blocked. The auxiliary electrode is suitably shaped to maintain a uniform field between the delay line 2 and the negative electrode 4. An electrode 12, Fig. 6, with fingers 13 may be provided between the auxiliary electrode and the cathode. During the pulses it is at an intermediate potential. The tube may be an amplifier, oscillator or frequency multiplier. In a backward-wave oscillator of the type described in Specification 699,893, the cathode is separate from the negative electrode and by varying the D.C. potential between the negative electrode and the delay line, the pulse modulated output is frequency modulated.
