In a gate or like valve operable by a rotatable screwed spindle 4 having a collar 3 engaging a shoulder 2 in the valve head 1 and the flange 5a of a screwthreaded bush 5 to prevent axial movement of the spindle; the bush is formed with a hexagonal hole to permit its insertion in the head by a suitable key and lugs 8 which on pressing into recesses 7 in the head lock the bush in position.
