929,877. Securing unthreaded pins. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc. July 14, 1959, No. 24220/59. Class 89 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] Means for securing the free end of an unthreaded pin 26, Fig. 2, comprises a sleeve 34 with a central hole 36 and a hollow stem 38 extending from one end of the hole and secured thereto by a neck 48. The stem is slit and either the exterior thereof or the hole 36 tapers so that when the neck is sheared to allow the sleeve to move along the stem, radial inward pressure is applied to grip the pin. The sleeve with its stem are made from synthetic resin, e.g. nylon or polythene. In a modification, the pin 26a, Fig. 6, has a recess 52 and the stem 38a has corresponding portions 40a to lock therewith. In a modification of Fig. 6, the hole 36 and the exterior of the stem have complementary shoulders to lock the stem to the sleeve. In another arrangement, penetration of the stem 38d, Fig. 12, into hole 36d is limited by stop shoulders 78 received in a recess 82 in the adjacent face of the sleeve. The shoulders and recess may be frusto-conical, and in yet another arrangement, the recess is omitted and the shoulders cover the end face of the sleeve. On a still further arrangement, the sleeve 34f, Fig. 16, constitutes a head for a screw 88.
